Sandcastle and Sculpture Contest

Spectators and contestants gathered at Jetties Beach on Saturday for the annual Sandcastle and Sculpture Contest. Nantucket Island School of Design and the Arts founded the event in 1975, and today it’s co-sponsored by the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce. “It began with neighborhood families getting together at the beach with a picnic to enjoy time together building sandcastles,” explains NISDA, “and has now grown to include the entire Nantucket community and island visitors, many coming from afar and returning year after year to participate.” Local celebrity judges awarded prize ribbons in several categories to the teams.
