The Nantucket Land Bank, Museum of African American History and Nantucket Historical Commission did a public unveiling of a monument honoring the life of Arthur Copper. Arthur Cooper and his wife landed on Nantucket in 1820 after they had self-emancipated from slavery. Arthur became a leader in Nantucket’s black community. In 1822, Arthur and his wife were pursued by a bounty hunter but were protected by the Nantucket anti-slavery community.
