During the summer and leading deep into hurricane season, the waters off Nantucket’s south shore come alive with surfers catching waves from dawn to dusk. Steady swells and warm water temperatures create ideal conditions for seasoned wave riders and those just learning to balance on a board. The recent brushby of Hurricane Ernesto stirred up bigger waves, giving surfers more opportunities to enjoy the surf. As summer winds down and lifeguards start to depart, Nantucket officials remind beachgoers to take extra precaution in the water.
